The Beat Movement ‘Another Piece Of The Puzzle’ EP Review

10623571_819947301419226_1888711186141071612_oThe Beat Movement are an unsigned four piece band from Greenock who I had the pleasure of briefly bumping into at the Hard Rock Glasgow last week. They consist of Mark Maclean (vocals/rhythm guitar), Lyall Mooney (guitar), Chris McEwan (bass) and Mark Heron (drums). The guys were kind enough to give me a copy of their latest EP and after a few listens I thought I’d better tell you about it!

‘Another Piece Of The Puzzle’ was released back in January with 3 of the 5 songs produced by Joe Foster who has previously worked with the likes of Primal Scream and The Jesus and Mary Chain. The others were self-produced by the band and music friends.

Maybe it’s just a sign that I’m not as young as I used to be, but I really like bands who’s musical influences can be traced to artists that I grew up with, back in the day.  First track ‘Don’t Know Who You Are’ for example, has a tremendous The Who kinda vibe to it. With driving guitars and great hooks it has a runaway train pace to it and is without a doubt my favourite track of the EP. Each track though, is well crafted and superbly performed. Without sounding contradictory they are all sound new and original but still have that old skool feel to them.

This would be an extremely good EP for any signed band to have recorded. For an unsigned band’s first effort… Take a bow guys!
